For your culminating individual course project, your task is to develop a one-day (maximum 8 hours) training session for which YOU are the applicable Trainer within your organization.

The first submission for your project requires you to complete the following items:

  • Introduce your company
  • Identify your training topic and specific subject area for your session
  • Develop a short course/session description
  • Complete your planning notes for your training session
  • Develop a course outline with the training module titles and time allocations for each module

Submission #1 -

  • (1A) company and course description
  • (1B) training session planning notes
  • (1C) course outline (training module titles and time allocations for each)
  • (1D) development of complete training objectives

Subsection 1A Company Overview, Training Topic/Subject, Course Description

In one short paragraph (3-4 sentences), introduce your company by describing what its business focus is and how many employees there are. Identify which training topic you selected and what specific subject area your training session will focus on.

Develop a brief course description. Managers often refer to a course catalogue (internal or external) to determine which courses are available, who should attend and what trainees will learn. In a short, single paragraph, describe your course. You will decide what the training need is and who should attend.

Subsection 1C and 1D Course Outline / Module Titles / Time Allocations / MODULE OBJECTIVES

Based on your planning notes, begin to develop the outline of your training session.

Your training day is limited to a maximum of 8 hours (including any breaks) and it is recommended that you limit your training modules to 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.

Each module should include a 1-2 line description and the time being allocated to each module. Think about:

It should be easy for the reader to determine if the modules that you are presenting will cover topics that will meet their needs and in the depth they are looking for

Include modules for the introduction and conclusion; include all required breaks

The timing of each module should make sense; you only have one day (8 hours) so you may need to limit what you talk about. Dont try to fit it all in.

Module Objective(s)

SUBSECTION 1D DEVELOPMENT OF COMPLETE TRAINING OBJECTIVES

  1. See information about objectives in the Chapter Highlights, objective resources in the Project section and the same video included in Week 4.
  2. Each module (except for introduction, conclusion, and breaks) requires a complete training objective. For the introduction and conclusion, only the performance aspect of the objective needs to be included.
  3. All other training objectives must include a PERFORMANCE, CONDITION, and a CRITERION. The criterion must be measurable during training for this project. This means you should not be looking for something like performance to increase by 5% or sales will increase by 10% these are future-oriented and can only be measured in the workplace after the person returns to work. The condition should be clear, and the criterion needs to be measurable. Do not use general descriptors such as accurate or effective be very specific.

Take some time to review the example Objective shown above in the INTERVIEWS GONE WRONG module example above. Can you spot all three of the required parts? See the breakdown noted below:

  1. PERFORMANCE "Trainees will demonstrate their current awareness of poor interview techniques"
  2. CONDITION "by individually creating a written list of"
  3. CRITERION "five interview errors shown in the video clip"

Examples of Module objectives: PERFORMANCE (What will the learner be able to do?)

  • the Recruitment Specialist will be able to identify poor interviewing techniques
  • the sales trainees will be able to describe the benefits of up-selling products

CRITERION (How will you measure what the learner will be able to do?

  • verbalizing 3 examples to a partner
  • listing 8 organizational benefits
