Question: Fred is working the pay drive - thru window and is complaining about how understaffed they are despite this day being one of the busiest
Fred is working the pay drivethru window and is complaining about how understaffed they are despite this day being one of the busiest in the week. He is screaming about one employee who has not yet come to work. Fred has only worked here for six weeks but has prior experience at another restaurant. Andrea who is generally responsible for working the fries station has been pressed into emergency duty working the front drivethru window because of scheduled workers have called in sick. She really can only moderately do this job when things are slow, but that is not today. She is getting more and more frustrated as more cars enter the drivethru line. Tara is cooking. It is her third day on the job, but her first one cooking alone. Nothing has ever prepared Tara for the volume of work that will be coming her way today. By : Tara has the grill full of burgers. Kathleen is going full speed trying to keep up with sandwich assembly and wrapping. Kathleen is the best assembler the store has, and would be a supervisor if not for her tendency to perform crazy antics on occasion. Yesterday she lit a can of vegetable spray with a lighter and danced around the floor dodging the flame arcing from the can. She is a friend of the store manager, Nancy, though, so everyone keeps quiet about her antics.
Andrea you have got to get moving. The line is really getting way too long. Move Andrea move, shouts Dan. Dan is the Assistant Store Manager. He does not seem to be picking up on the fact that Andrea is not good enough to work the window and is beginning to freak out a bit. Ill help out Fred announces. I can work the pay window then run up front to help Andrea when she gets way behind. Dan says nothing and goes back to the office where he begins to count the morning receipts for the breakfast rush.
Taras responsibilities include cooking baked potatoes in the oven and cooking chicken in the pressure cooker, so there is little chance for her to do anything besides staying on top of the job. Finally, at noon in comes Charlie, the Shift Supervisor. He will replace Dan at : PM but for now he is a sorely needed pair of hands on the second sandwich assembly board. Charlie looks over at Tara and shouts above the din, Good job Tara. Keeping up with the Friday rush on your third cooking day. Good job. That represents the first compliment Tara has received in the two weeks she has worked at the restaurant.
By : everyone is stressed out. Even with Freds help, Andrea falls farther and farther behind. Andrea is now making mistakes on orders in efforts to get food out the drivethru window. Dan screams for everyone to hear We are averaging over minutes on drive time. Heads are going to roll if we dont push that down. He says this directly to Andrea. The drive time from an order being placed until the customer receives it should be two minutes thirty seconds.
The normal staffing for a Friday is people including management. Due to the absenteeism the restaurant team is working with people including the two managers. By noon Andrea is crying but stays at it Things finally slow at : PM which leads to a series of break requests. This leads to Dan setting the order of breaks with Andrea to receive the last break and Tara the next to last break. When Tara takes her break she only takes minutes of the allotted minute break. When Tara returns from her break Dan sneers at her What was that about a half an hour? Tara, hurt by the comment snaps back If I could tell time, would I be working fast food? Dan smirks and walks off.
It is now : and Andrea has told Dan twice that she has to leave. Her agreement with the store manager, Nancy, at the time of hire was that she would leave no later than : every day. Her daughter gets off the school bus at : and she must be there at that time. Dan ignores her first request and is nowhere to be found when at : Andrea looks around frantically and pleads to no one in particular I have to go then goes. Ten minutes later there is another surge of customers. Charlie screams Where is Andrea? Thats it Shes gone tomorrow. No more chances for her. When hes done ranting, Tara gives the details of Andreas dilemma. Angrily, Charlie stomps back to the Managers office and confronts Dan. The yelling quickly becomes very loud. The argument soon drifts to unresolved issues that the Assistant Store Manager and Shift Supervisor have between themselves. This dispute is heard by everyone in the store including customers.
Charlie: Im sick of coming here and finding nothing stocked. I know you are the Assistant Store Manager Dan, but its your job to make sure the lunch shift stocks items in their spare time. It never happens and I am sick of it Now you tell me that you are leaving me Are there any recommendations about pay or benefit practices that you think might improve the m
