Friction at an angle

This will require some articles found around your home. You need a loonie or toonie, and something solid like a cutting board, hard cover book, piece of wood, or something similar to slide the coin down.

Mass of loonie from 2003 to 2012 = 7.0 grams. From 2013 to 2020 = 6.27 grams

Mass of toonie from 2003 to 2012 = 7.3 grams. From 2013 to 2020 = 6.92 grams.

A picture of a protractor is at the end of this lab, in case you do not have one of your own.

1. Place a coin on one end of a solid surface.
2. Slowly raise that end of the surface until the coin starts to slide down the incline. Use a protractor to measure the angle the surface makes with the table when the coin first starts to slide. Repeat several times and find an average of your angles.

3 Calculate the Force that is applied to make the object slide down the incline.

4 Find a different surface to use. Repeat the experiment with the different surface.

5 Compare the roughness of the two surfaces. Explain how theangle needed to start the coin sliding down the incline was affected by the roughness of the surface.
