G. To understand that validity and representations are powerful tools for understanding relationships when necessary constraints and adaptations are made
R - You are part of an investigating team, investigating a pirate attack. A - Your target audience is the jury.
S - Pirate attack:
In the early hours of April 1, 2010, when a pirate attack group opened fire on the USS Nicholas (pictured below) in the middle of the Indian Ocean, about 570 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, their mission failed and the pirates were captured. The Navy held a hearing to determine what happened during the encounter. One witness was on watch in the CIC (Combat Information Center) when the attack happened. She said that she saw a pirate holding his gun at a 450 angle pointing up towards the ship. She also stated the pirate appeared to be about 100 yards away from the ship. When the ship was inspected, a bullet hole was discovered in the mast, about 150 feet above the waterline. This bullet hole matched the size of the bullets used by the pirate.
P - You will create a 1-page written report, supported by mathematical proof, analyzing the validity of the witness testimony, drawing a conclusion whether it was the truth or providing a more likely scenario. You must use your knowledge of right triangles (For example; Pythagoras Theorem, Trigonometry, Angles of Elevation and Depression) to determine the validity of the original situation in the pirate attack, exploring how angles and distances affect the ability of a shot to land at a certain place on a ship.
S - Your report shall be presented to the Judge (Ms Lil, Mr Ibrahim and Mr Roshan) and Jury (classmates) against Criteria C & D
Criteria C:
i. use appropriate mathematical language (notation, symbols and terminology) in both oral and written explanations
ii. use appropriate forms of mathematical representation to present information
iii. move between different forms of mathematical representation
iv. communicate complete, coherent and concise mathematical lines of reasoning
v. organize information using a logical structure.
Criteria D:
i. identify relevant elements of authentic real-life situations
ii. select appropriate mathematical strategies when solving authentic real-life situations
iii. apply the selected mathematical strategies successfully to reach a solution
iv. justify the degree of accuracy of a solution
v. justify whether a solution makes sense in the context of the authentic real-life situation.
A successful report must include both a written conclusion and mathematical evidence to support the conclusion drawn. A successful report must meet the following standards:
G-RST.6 Understand that by similarity, side ratios in right triangles are properties of the angles in the triangle, leading to definitions of trigonometric ratios for acute angles.
G-RST.8 Use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems.
