Question:
Geneva Conventions are customary approved agreements for international treaties that was created in Geneva Switzerland between 1864 and 1949. These treaties serve as a guide to restrain unsparing actions and manage the behavior of military forces in conflict or battle towards wounded military personnel, medical personnel, and civilians. These conventions were approved in Geneva on August 12, 1949 and consist of: (1) the Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded and Sick in Armed Forces in the Field, (2) the Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded, Sick, and Shipwrecked Members of Armed Forces at Sea, (3) the Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, and (4) the Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of (Malcom Shaw Feb 13, 2024 Geneva Conventions). These conventions are closely associated with the Red Cross, the Red Cross symbol provides protection for civilians providing aid to the wounded under these agreements.
One part of the conventions that resonates with me is Prisoners Of War (POW) are to be treated humanely; including, they must not be killed, seriously endangered, mutilated or subject to medical or scientific experiments. POWs cannot be prosecuted for taking a direct part in hostilities. Their detention is not a form of punishment, but only aims to prevent further participation in the conflict. They must be released and repatriated without delay after the end of hostilities. The detaining power may prosecute them for possible war crimes, but not for acts of violence that are lawful under International humanitarian law (ICRC October 2010 Prisoners of war). I feel any person held in detention or imprisonment by any form of law enforcement or military should be treated with human dignity.
