Gini (2005) writes that "the work ethic is about the role and acceptance of work in our lives. . . It's about personal and communal fulfillment and survival through work. The work ethic is about life and living. Workaholism, says Fassel, is just the opposite. "Workaholism is a substitute for life. It's about self-absorbed, compulsive behavior and performance fixation. Workaholism is about addiction." (p. 22) Not only is work an addition, but so, too, is consumption as we have seen through the Affluenza film and from the Manson (2017) reading where he asserts that self-improvement may not be all that it's cracked up to be if it means we do one thing to the exclusion of everything else. He wrote: "Life is an economy. Where everything must be traded for something else and the value of all things rise and fall with the amount of attention and effort you put into them.
