Fire, Fire, Burning Bright

The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America is a very important and necessary regulation for our country. The whole concept behind our country is the idea of freedom. It is what makes our country distinctive and stand out. There are certain things that can be controversial for the people of our country when it comes to this topic though. Ideas revolving around literature can be contestable. Discussing literature dealing with authority, freedom, accessibility, and acceptableness can be a very intricate matter.

Books are a very essential piece to our life. Restricting or banning a book can be a sensitive topic. All pieces of literature have been written for a reason. So, to restrict or ban a book is a hard task to complete. It is difficult to distinguish who has the ability to ban books. Furthermore, how do you determine who has the authority to pronounce a book as "wrong" enough to be taken away? With school limits, I can see how some books may be banned to teach in a school setting. I think it is important to have a conversation with your students on why those books are not allowed in a classroom but still give them the ability to read them on their own time. Just because it was impermissible to be directly taught in school, does not mean the students cannot read it at all. Going off of that, I do not think the U.S. government has the right to ban books from the whole country. Since our whole country's point of view is based off of the opportunity of freedom, it would not make sense to ban pieces of literature. People should have the right to read what they choose.

Book burning is another debatable topic. I feel as though you can look at this idea from multiple perspectives. I can see how this is a form of freedom of speech. It gives someone the opportunity to express their opinions openly. Being able to convey your beliefs is a foundational standard of our country. On the other hand, if someone were to burn as many books as they could to rid that book of existence, that may be considered censorship to the extreme. To eliminate literature all together would be irrational. I do think that there are more productive ways to express your issues with specific literature as to why you would burn it. Overall, I just do not seem to understand why someone would feel it would be necessary to burn books.

When it comes to restricted or religious texts, I feel as though the freedom of use is unlimited. I believe anyone can read The Bible. It does not matter what religion or race someone is, The Bible is still a book. Literature should be openly available and accessible to everyone. Unfortunately, I know that some countries do not allow religious freedom, but that is not how things should be. While reading these types of texts though, people should be respectful and use them properly. Not everyone has to agree with everything written in these types of religious texts, but hatred and discrimination do not need to occur. I think burning a religious piece of literature, like The Bible, is an improper act.

The most exceptional thing about literature is that there are so many different ways to perceive a piece of written text. People can take writing in numerous ways. This can become an issue with people feeling hurt, offended, saddened, etc. with literature that was not originally intended for those feelings. I would say that 100 percent of all written material is capable of offending someone. Just because it is so easy for people to take writing differently than what the author envisioned. This is what makes literature so essential for our society though. It brings up other perspectives, opinions, and stories that people may never would have heard or thought about. So, although a text may be unintentionally offensive to someone, it does not discredit the piece of writing. Unfortunately, all writing can be offensive.

It cannot be stressed enough how necessary The First Amendment of the United States is. People come to our country because of how much freedom we offer to our citizens. Considering The First Amendment with literature can be a complex subject, it is something that still needs to be discussed. Authority, freedom, accessibility, and acceptableness are critical ideas revolving around literature in company with The First Amendment.
