GIVE A SHORT REPLY TO THIS POST Starting my full time career at the age 19 and fresh out of college I decided to work for a law firm as a legal secretary. This law firm was family owned by a well known family. Since I was young and new I was put with the lowest lawyer. As time went on it was quick to realize how I was being treated, along with the lawyer I was under. He was the only lawyer not family or friend oriented and was younger than the rest. Months passed by and the lawyer and myself were working hard to handle all the cases handed his way. More times than not we were sat down to be chastised for not handling certain items the way the partners were, but never showed direct instructions on how to handle certain situations. A couple months passed and a new lawyer was hired as a partner and was treated perfectly normal since the first day he started, but came to find out he was a family friend. It was known throughout the office that the new and younger employees and non-partner lawyers were treated differently then the family oriented new hires.
The result of this ethical dilemma was never handled within the law firm. The biggest issue with cronyism is that few people see this as a problem (Nadler & Schulman, 2015). I decided it was for my best interest that it was time for me to leave. The reasoning process that I went through to reach my decision was deciding what was best for my mental health. At the end of the day it was a huge struggle to feel like no matter what I did it was never going to be right. Also I decided that it was not personally worth the fight to bring this any higher then it should, especially when they would see nothing wrong. After this week's reading my perspective on this dilemma was actually justified that what they were doing is not normal and it should not happen. Especially after reading the chapter ethics and the law it showcased that some think if I comply with the law then there is nothing wrong which opened my eyes to what actually happened (Gilbert,2016). Looking back I am satisfied with the decision I made to leave. To me I was not in any position to make any further actions with this.
