Question:
Give your short opinion on each paragraph below and reply with reference.
1.McDermott's background, which includes experiences such as managing a deli shop in Long Island and working in sales for Xerox, exposed him to diverse groups of people and customers. These experiences likely helped him develop interpersonal and communication skills that are essential for cross-cultural management. His ability to recognize the importance of listening to customers and employees, both in the United States and abroad, shows his adaptability and responsiveness to cultural differences.
2. McDermott saw that presentations in the U.S. were much more effective if the presentation quickly engaged the audience, and got them excited. By understanding how culture is different and how it works, he was able to use the right negotiation to sell Xerox copy machines and helped turn a business around in Puerto Rico.
3.Dermott learned valuable lessons from his experiences that he could use throughout his career. They allowed him to create and implement effective solutions and strategies for managing cross cultural teams. The GLOBE findings show how the influence of culture on societal leadership differs from each country and the importance of matching top level managers' behaviors to expectations for leadership effectiveness.
4.My assessment of his lessons is that he took the time to listen, learn, and understand the difference in the cultures. He made changes to his management style based on what he learned was important in each culture. He was successful in doing so because he changed his style based on the needs and wants of the particular culture he was working with. Once doing so, he saw production, moral, and sales increase. The GLOBE study does this on a much larger scale as they collect data from over 100 CEO's and Senior Executives from corporations in a variety of industries in 24 countries. The study focuses on influence of culture on societal leadership expectations and the importance of matching CEO behaviors to expectations of successful leadership (GLBOE, n.d.).
