Given the following business rules, create a Crows Foot ERD.

  • Present PK and FK
  • Indicate composite attribute using ( ). Inside of the parenthesis, present components of the attribute.
  • Multivalued attribute needs to convert for an independent entity type avoiding data redundancy.
  • Convert M:N to 1:M, if needed.
  • UNIVERSITY department hires PROFESSORS for research and teaching. Data about professor such as professor number, specialty, rank, name, email address, and phone number are captured.

  • UNIVERSITY is divided into several COLLEGES: business, engineering, and science. Each college is identified by its college code. The name of college is also captured in database. Each college is administered by a dean who is a professor. Each professor can be the dean of only one college, and a professor is not required to be the dean of any college.

  • Each college operates several DEPARTMENTS. Department code and name are captured. The code is used to uniquely identify each department. Each college must have a department at least. On the other hand, each department belongs to only a single college.

  • The data about COURSES offered by each department are also captured: course code, course title, course description, and course credit. Each department may offer several courses. However, some departments are classified as research only and would not offer courses. Different departments cannot offer a same course.

  • Each department may provide several SECTIONS of the same course. Each of those sections taught by a professor at a given time in a given place. Section code and section time are captured.

  • Additionally, each section is offered during a given semester. SEMESTER defines the year and the termthat the section will be offered. Each semester is identified by semester code. It is possible that UNIVERSITY calendar is set with semester beginning and ending dates prior to the creation of the semester section schedule so section is optional to semester. That is, a course section may or may not open in a specific semester.

  • Each department should employ one or more professors assigned to it. One and only one of those professors chairs the department, and no professor is required to accept the chair position.

  • Each professor may teach up to four sections in a semester. A professor may also be on a research contract and teach no sections at all.

  • Data about STUDENTS are captured including student number, student name, student email, and major. Students are allowed to have double-major. When a student applies double-major, the data of application and required credit should be recorded.

  • A student can register 5 course sections in maximum in a single semester. However, to stay in a program, a student must enroll at least one course section. A course section must record 5 or more enrolled students to be offered. Otherwise, the course section would be withdrawn. When a student enroll a course section, enrolled data and grade are required to record. While some courses have a prerequisite(s) to take it, others have no prerequisite.

  • Each department has several students whose major is offered by that department. However, each student is associated with a single department although he has double majored one.

  • Each student has an advisor in his department. Each advisor counsels several students. An advisor is also a professor, but not all professors advise students.

  • Because a section course is taught in a room, data about ROOM is also captured: room code and room type. While a single room is assigned to a course section, a single room is reserved for many course sections.

  • For management of rooms, data about BUILDING that has rooms are stored, including building code, building name, and building location. Each room is located in a building and a building can contain many rooms. However, some buildings are dedicated to research only so they only labs.
