Given the graph of y=f(x) , does the order we apply the transformations y = af(b(x-h)+k when graphing matter? Justify your answer. This activity is open-ended and can be explored at many different levels. I know some students could spend many, many hours exploring the topic. I want you to limit the time you spend on it to 1-2 hours. On the other hand, if you are only spending 15 minutes on it, it is probably not enough to do an adequate job! If you do not know where to start, I suggest you pick a specific parent function. The straight line function is probably the hardest to work with so I would pick a parabola, a square root function or a cubic. Apply a set of transformations to this parent function to see what happens. Change the order of the transformation and again document what happens...hopefully that gets you started.
