Given the strong connection between trauma and AOD services, AOD workers will likely benefit from developing familiarity with pieces of legislation relevant to traumatic events that are impacting on your clients and/or co-occurring needs. While it is not your role to provide legal advice in any circumstances, you need to be aware of any legislative requirements that may apply to your role (e.g., when client's or their children's safety are at stake), how it may relate to the challenges and circumstances a client is facing, and where you may direct clients to for accessing relevant legal support or advocacy. For example, when working with a client on probation who has parenting orders in place, your understanding of criminal law and family law will help you to better understand the client's circumstances and determine practicality of strategies/intervention within relevant legislative requirements
