INT 1113 - Feasibility of International Trade Guidelines for Research Brief Weightage: 15% Purpose: A research brief is a statement from the candidate/student setting out the objectives and background to the case in sufficient detail to enable the researcher to plan an appropriate study. As a general rule a market feasibility study is only as good as the brief. The brief is important to the researcher: it educates and influences the choice of method. It gives the objective to which the project is geared. The research brief should be a dialogue. It is expected that the candidate/student has thought through the problem and set objectives for the study, though these may be modified as the briefing session develops. Nor are briefs irrevocable. Information discovered during the research programme may alter the complexion of the problem and prompt a change in direction. Progress reporting is therefore a vital part of every study. What a Research Brief should contain: Whether written or oral, the research sponsor should pay regard to a number of subjects which constitute a good brief: A background to the problem: this may be a short chronicle of the events which have led up to and precipitated the study. It gives the researcher a perspective and a better understanding of why the project is to be commissioned. A description of the product (or service) which is to be researched: the researcher needs as much detail as possible. The greater the understanding of the features benefits, construction and uses of the product (or services), the more closely it will be tailored. It can be helpful for the sponsor to state which products are included as well as those which are not. Technical data sheets and product literature are a big help. A description of the markets to be researched: the researcher must know which geographical territories the study will cover and whether or not it will be limited to certain end user markets. Problem:- The Canadian Horse Defence Coalition is a collective of people, and national groups, who have joined forces in order to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption in Canada. As well, the CHDC is lobbying to ban the inhumane transport and export of live horses to other countries for the same purpose. Bouvry Exports Calgary LTD operates one of the largest horse slaughter plants in Canada approved to export horse meat to the European Union. The plant is located near Fort Macleod, a small town in Alberta. Bouvry Exports owns about 2000 acres of land around Fort Macleod, where they fatten US and Canadian horses in large feedlots. The majority of these horses appear to be Belgium draft horses & Percherons. Boury also leases property at the Peigan Indian Reservation near Summerview, where they keep up to 4500 horses. Feedlot conditions are poor. Horses have no shelter from sun and snow. Horses are in barren pens with feed troughs that are kept full all day long. Most of the horses observed had a body condition score of 7-8. Some horses are so overweight that they spend much time kuina down 1+ in im ont to otroon the score of 7-8. Some horses are so overweight that they spend much time lying down. It is important to stress the potential consequences of over feeding horses, particularly overfeeding grain. Laminitis, an extremely painful hoof disease and other health issues can arise from obesity in horses. Bouvry Exports also maintains vast pastures with mares & foals, which could be an indication that they are breeding their own horses to accommodate the European demands regarding drug residues. The majority of these pastures offer no shelter for the horses and no protection for the foals from extreme weather conditions. Bouvry Exports owns thousands of horses at any given day, which makes providing each horse with appropriate care difficult at best. Observations confirm that their hooves are neglected and that sick horses in obvious physical distress do not get immediate veterinary help. Many horses that are slaughtered at Bouvry Exports are horses that so called kill buyers" obtain for Bouvry at horse auctions. Bouvry also imports horses from the US, where the company operates the large "Bar S feedlot in Shelby, Montana.
