Great insightful post. Your group's post was clear and grounded about the legal aspects. How would you avoid the legal aspect of paraphrasing? With paraphrasing credit is supposed to go to the author(s) and is supposed to be labeled correctly, which is difficult to know exactly how if APA formatting is new or strange to the student. Remember, just because you have properly paraphrased does not mean that you do not to cite the source of the original idea (Richmond, 2025, para 1). Our goals as educators, we need to avoid legal issues for ourselves, our students, and the college or university by teaching our students to cite properly and to have permission to use the material in our lessons. The "first use is free" standard invoked by many libraries is not part of the Copyright Act or any subsequent rulings or agreed-upon guidelines (Copyright, 2022, para 6).
