Group Assignment One Lean Project Due: Sunday, 10/10/21 11:59pm The first and second tenets in lean thinking are to specify precisely what about a product or service creates value from the customers perspective and to identify, study, and improve the value stream of the process for each product or service. (Schroeder and Goldstein, pp. 120-121). For your lean project, your group will be required to understand and make limited application of both of these tenets. Your group will take on the role of a lean operations team to solve a couple of pressing problems. 1. The first part of the project requires you to complete problem #4 on page 140. Assume that a plant operates 2000 hours per year and the demand rate for parts is 100,000 units per year. The circulation time for each kanban container is 24 hours. a) How many kanban containers are needed for a container size of 100 parts? b) What would be the effect of reducing the container size to 60 parts? c) What is the takt time for this process? d) What takt time is needed for 80,000 units per year? This problem requires you to develop the optimum schedule (kanban) based on the true customer requirements (takt time). To do this you will eliminate non-value added activities or waste. 2. The second part of the project requires you to create two value stream maps. This is Discussion Question #13 on page 139. Construct a value stream map for the following processes. a) Cafeteria b) Grocery store Through value stream mapping you will identify the steps in a process and estimate how much of the time is value added and how much of the time is non-value added (use Figure 7.1 as an example).
