This week, you will concentrate on an individual case study. Jack White has been named General Manager of the pet food division of Strickland Corporation. Due to the recent competitive movements of key competitors, he made a strategic evaluation that convinced him that the division required fast and substantial restructuring in various ways. As a young man, Jack has sufficient familiarity with the market to recognise that a number of outlets have considerable resistance to the amendments. He assumes that some of the resistance will come from those with the power to conduct themselves in ways that might seriously stymy good change. Jack takes the situation into consideration. He believes like the new improvements can be implemented as quickly as practicable, but he also recognises that if he pushes too quickly, he will not have a chance to engage employers in a constructive dialogue about the changes. One answer is to step fast to make clear that someone who wants to comply will suffer "effects." He has the power to respond to such an assault. Jack realises the risk is there is a massive difference between failing to cooperate and acting in a manner that shows loyalty, particularly though no one is totally opposed to this. When it comes to legislation, he understands he needs the cooperation of core employee groups and that "mind enforcement at the minimal level is virtually as helpless as resistance." But he thinks to himself, "Maybe I am overwhelming this issue." "Maybe I should just go forward and pass." People are going to stop if they don't like it. When they sit, they're going to come back. Jack is unsure, on the other side. He is thinking of another chance. Perhaps he could make an attempt, if not the entire organisation, to obtain support from key groups of managers and workers. "Maybe," he muses, "the need for change was not as urgent as I believe; all I knew was that if this consultation could happen quickly, I would be much better." "Your duty lies with you.
