Hate crimes punish an individual more harshly if the state can prove the criminal targeted someone specifically because of their race, gender, etc. Do "hate crimes" serve the greater societal good? Or should the emphasis be on the criminal act versus the criminal motive? In other words, does it matter that someone was killed specifically because of their race, for example, or does it simply matter that they were killed? Discuss.
