Hello Class, for this discussion will be going over lead lapping a barrel. Lapping is used to removed gouges and pits from the barrel. The owner of this rifle informed us that he had recently started shooting corrosive surplus ammunition that damage the barrel which in turn caused inconsistency with accuracy. Lapping will almost always help accuracy, even new barrels but if the barrel has been damaged too severely, the barrel must be replaced. First, we will go over material and tools necessary. For material we will need lead to cast the lap, lapping solution, oil, and metal polish. For tools we will need a bore guide, a cleaning rod with patch holder, lead melting pot, a torch, and cotton twine. The lapping rod will consist of a cleaning rod with patch holder, cotton twine at the base of the patch holder, used center the rod as well as create a barrier to keep lead from running down the barrel, and the lap. The create a lap lead will be poured into the muzzle end of the barrel and allowed to cool and take the shape and riffling of the barrel. Once the perfect lap has been created, you will add lapping compound to the lap and run forward and backwards ensuring the lap does not fall out. Usually, 20-30 passes will get the job done, however, a barrel with really pits and gouges will take a couple of hours. Once the desired result has been accomplished, the barrel must be cleaned thoroughly and polished. Below is link to a very helpful video.
