Hello class, For this week's discussion I have decided to answer question number 1. It asks "Why is it important to identify the critical path before starting a project? On what kind of projects would the critical path be irrelevant?" Being able to identify the critical path before starting a project is necessary because it helps the project manager identify the sequence of tasks or activities that will determine the shortest duration to complete the project. According to the projectmanager.com, the critical path "is the longest sequence of tasks that must be completed to execute a project." (projectmanager.com Editor, 2023) The critical path is determined by identifying the sequence of activities that have the same Early Start and Early Finish times, meaning they have zero slack. the formula looks like this EF=ES + t. By figuring the critical path out, the project manager can focus time and resources on the tasks that will have the largest impact on the overall timeline. The information the critical path provides will assist in better planning, risk management, and resource allocation. The activities that are associated with the critical path have no flexibility or slack in their completion. This means that if the task is delayed it will directly affect the entire project completion date.
