Inmates experience 22 to 24 hours per day in their cells, leading to feelings of helplessness and despair. A strict daily schedule dictates meal times as well as exercise and work assignments, which means inmates have minimal freedom to make personal decisions. Poor food quality drives inmates towards dissatisfaction with their prison life. Inmates face psychological difficulties while dealing with a lack of personal freedom and the emotional burdens that come with being confined. Prison subcultures display complexity that heavily influences how inmates experience their incarceration. Prisoners build essential networks of friendships and partnerships as they adapt to the hostile environment. The prison subculture operates on distinct norms and hierarchical structures that prioritize strength and loyalty but expose weakness to exploitation. Survival within the prison social structure requires inmates to navigate complex dynamics and develop mental health maintenance strategies through activities such as reading or exercising.
