Case 10A The End of Gene's Dream? Martha knew something was bothering her husband, Gene, as soon as she saw him get out of his truck. She thought that sending him into town for supplies would raise his spirits a bit. Gene still had not recovered from the sudden death of his lifelong friend, Ron Hutchinson. They had grown up together in Paxton. Their fathers had farmed next to each other. They had shared equipment once they took over from their dads and always watched out for each other over many years. Now Ron was gone and the world just did not seem the same. Once inside the farm office, Gene slid into the chair nearest his wife's desk and stared at the floor. When she asked him what was going on he told her that the word in town was that the Hutchinson farm was going up for sale. As far as Gene knew, Ron's will gave everything to his wife Sally, but it seemed that she did not want the responsibility for their 1,000-acre farm. The Hutchinsons' two sons, Steve and Jeff, had both left the area once they graduated from college and could not devote much time to managing the operation. Prior to Ron's death everyone had wanted the farm to stay in the family so their mother could remain in the farmhouse, and they planned to rent the land so she would have an income to live on. The reality of their father's death had forced the two brothers to take a closer look at their family situation. Their mother's health had been failing and they were not sure if she was able to live alone way out in the country. As they settled their father's estate, the family's lawyer told them they might face a considerable tax bill once their mother passes on. He suggested that they consider incorporating their farm as a way to limit their taxes. Once Steve and Jeff weighed all the information, they convinced their mother that selling the farm would be best. It was good land and prices were on the rise. Gene told Martha that it was time for them to think about their situation. Their three daughters, Emily, Jamie, and Casey, had all graduated from college and had families of their own. Only Emily's husband Scott worked on their farm and had a long-term commitment to farming. "I just don't want to see our farm end up like the Hutchinson place. Gone from the family after all these years," Gene said sadly. What can they do to make Gene's dream come true?
