Week 3 Case Study DISCUSSION INSTRUCTIONS:
This week, you will be working in small groups to apply what you learned in class by examining a case study using conflict resolution techniques. You will be required to complete a series of required tasks with hard deadlines to earn credit. Group participation will go on without the instructor's intervention.
ByThursdaysubmit your individual answer responding to questions posed(minimum350words,evidence of textbook and additional scholarly used). Please note thatdue to the engaged nature of this assignment and a requirement of individual accountability to the group, late posts do not earn any credit (regardless of circumstances).
I have placed you in a small group (1, 2, or 3). Your group number corresponds with your case study. Please do not answer a different case study other than the one assigned to your group.
BySaturday/Sundayreply to two group members (each response should be at least200words). A strong peer reply will acknowledge and further extend on what the classmates shared, add new ideas fully supported by communication research (i.e., scholarly sources), and ask open-ended meaningful questions to extend conversations further.
BySundaypost afinal reflectionon this exercise. What have you learned about the case study? What have you learned from your teammates about various ways in which one conflict may be resolved? What will you take away from this discussion? (Post 4; minimum 350 words, incorporate scholarly support and cite specific peer contributions and reflections).
Case Study for Group #3
Your boss and you are having some interpersonal problems. He does several things that you find really annoying. To start, he is not considerate of your co-workers or you. You often find yourself thinking that some of his behavior annoys you. Yet, he is your boss, so what can you do? He comes in late to the office each day and interrupts your planned day by assigning a whole new set of priorities. To be fair, he does stay late (you have flextime in your office), and he has a good reason to be late - he has childcare responsibilities to fulfill on school mornings. However, his habit of coming in and interrupting the schedule for your day is really off-putting. By the time you have listened to his concerns, reprioritized your work, and gotten back on track, it is almost lunchtime and you feel you have wasted almost a half day trying to respond to his concerns. You are afraid to confront him -it would only put him on the defensive, and it wouldn't really change anything. But you are also tired of not feeling productive. You just wish he could be a little more sensitive to your situation, be more organized, and aware of your time constraints. Is that asking too much?
1. What is your immediate reaction to the scenario? How would you feel if you were a member of the team writing about this situation?
2. How could this situation have been avoided?
3. What approaches to resolving this conflict are appropriate? Choose one or more of the 5 approaches in Chapter 11.
4. What are some things that, if done, would make this approach successful?
5. What are some things to avoid when attempting to resolve this conflict? Why?
