Wyatt Smith : Jun 12 10:52pm Tariffs appear to be used primarily in one of two ways. The first is to protect or theoretically support domestic businesses. The logic behind it is if the cost of foreign goods goes up and the cost of domestic products remains the same; the domestic goods should be more appealing to consumers to some degree. The other way they're used is to essentially punish other countries economically for their actions. For example, if a country starts a war with an ally of ours, odds are we would put significant tariffs on the aggressor and encourage other nations to do the same. This shows support for our ally while also potentially hindering the attacking nation economically giving them less funds to fuel their war and resulting in a shorter conflict. More often than not however, it's the lower class or poorer citizens that get affected the most by trade wars. To put it simply, if you're targeting the cheapest products on the market with tariffs, and not stimulating the economy in any other way, all the government is effectively doing is increasing the cost of living for the lower class. Considering we make up the largest percentage of the population regardless of which country you look at, trade wars basically hurt every country involved. The more we import from the targeted country, the greater the impact. Inversely if tariffs are placed on a country we trade very little with, it would have minimal effect on us, but also likely have little effect on the tariffed country. Reply | & Mark as Unread
