Special Project: Country Case #1
- 1st Country Case: Corruption, Transnational Crime and Terrorism
Objective: You will have a country case that will analyze a particular country and its plight with corruption, transnational crime and/or terrorism. You will have to provide a detailed policy brief on the situation of your country and provide possible courses of action by the government with the help of the international community (if necessary) to deal with these problems. Work should be based on assigned readings, PowerPoints and outside material, and of course your own analysis. Due date: Wednesday, October 18 by midnight EST no late work will be accepted! Instructions: 1. Work must be done individually.
2. Students must choose a particular country that is facing a challenging situation due to corruption and its link with transnational crime and/or terrorism. Your focus must be how this country is dealing with the interdependence that exists between corrupt government officials and TCOs and/or Terrorist organizations. 3. Students must first present a detailed explanation of the current situation in the country chosen: how is the current political system working? What's the present socioeconomic and political situation of the country (level of stability or instability) (include data such as poverty level and GDP, among other economic parameters) what are its most pressing problems? Is it a post-conflict society or is it a society that is currently facing violence and conflict? How is its relationship with its neighbors and/or the international community? 4. Students must then provide a detailed description of how corruption, as its linked to transnational crime and/or terrorism has affected the political and economic stability of the country. (You may provide historical background regarding how these problems have evolved over time. In many cases the TCOs have existed for a very long time and have affected state development) In your description it is very important that you include the types of corruption present, who's doing the corrupt/criminal or terrorist activities, the links that exist between the government and the TCOs or Terrorist Organizations and the effects these connections/relations have on the decision-making process of government, on government policies and on the general political culture of the country chosen. Your main objective is to explain how this interdependent relationship works and how it has affected your country's growth, stability and development. 5. Students must end work with a conclusion that analyzes possible courses of action by the government to end or diminish corruption and analyze the possible role that the international community (whether global or regional in scope) may have in aiding the country. 6. Power Point must be visually attractive, but the most important factors that will be evaluated will be content, use of concepts and definitions from the readings and the PowerPoints and capacity to explain your case in a well-versed oral presentation. Please take note that oral presentation must be between 15 to 20 minutes. Presentations will begin in class on Thursday, Oct. 19! no exceptions. 7. At least 3 sources must be used and correctly cited throughout work. There must be a bibliography slide at the end of the presentation which shows sources used (Wikipedia is not allowed)
