\"The Situation\" Project Management Sequencing Activity The Situation The Challenge STEP 1 DIRECTIONS Your organization has just assigned you to a newly formed task team which is taking over a secret project presently being handled by Research and Development. Your entire team has been assigned responsibility and authority to design a plan for managing the project, and then after top management has reviewed and accepted your plans 7 carry out the project. None of you has been told anything about the project so far, other than it is expected to grow to sizeable proportions, requiring additional people. Despite the lack of information regarding the project, your team must new design a preliminary plan for managing it. On the next page is a list of 20 Management Activities (A through T) arranged in random order. Your task is to arrange these activities according to the sequence you would following in planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling the project. Top management will review this sequence before you are authorized to begin work on the project. Since you have a few minutes before your team meets for the rst time, go over the list of Nianagement Activities on the next page. Order the 20 management activities according to the sequence you think should be followed in managing the project. Write number \"1,\" next to the activity you feel should come first. Continue until you reach \"20,\" the last activity. Record your answers in the column laheied ((StSP-I .9, Agairg management will review the suggested sequence before you are authorized to begin the project. Management Activities Step Individual Sequence Find qualified people to fill positions. Measure progress toward, and/ or deviation from, the project' 5 goals. Identify and analyze the various job tasks necessary to implement the project. Develop strategies (priorities, sequence, timing of major steps). Develop possible alternative courses of action. Deliver appropriate consequences for individual performance. Assign responsibility/ accountability/ authority. Set project objectives (desired results). Train and develop personnel for new responsibilities/ authority Gather and analyze the facts of the current project situation. Establish qualications for new positions. Take corrective action on the project (recycle project plans). Coordinate daytoday activities. Determine the allocation of resources (including budget, facilities, etc). Measure individual performance against performance objectives and standards. Identify the negative consequences of each course of action. Develop individual performance objectives which are mutually agreeable to the individual and his / her manager. Dene scope of relationships, responsibilities, and authority of new positions.
