Because it's familiar and rooted in shared values, religious language can make a movement's message seem more moral or powerful, and that helps draw more support. Religion also brings people together through shared beliefs and places like churches, which often serve as organizing spaces. These settings make it easier for people to connect and take action. At the same time, religion can sometimes divide people, especially when there are disagreements or when one group uses it to exclude others. There has also been a shift in the types of social movements associated with religion. In the 1960s, religious groups were more active in liberal causes, like the civil rights movement. More recently, many religious movements are often associated with more conservative political ideologies. Graham (2023) writes about how religious passion is growing within the American political right, with some calling it a new "Jesus movement." This blending of faith and politics demonstrates how religion can influence not only movements but also how people perceive themselves politically. When religion becomes part of political action, it can bring strong attention and attract more people to the cause.
