Social justice movements conducted online are vulnerable to misinformation because each article has a target audience that is or is not in favor of the movement. An article in favor of a movement will share the positives and have a main goal at the end of the movement. On the other hand, an article not in favor of a movement will share the negatives happening during the movement while giving conspiracies to why the main goal is unattainable.

A social movement happening right now are the immigration protests in Los Angeles, California. Some people have the view that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and law enforcement agencies helping are tearing families apart, which leads to violence throughout the city. Others have the view that ICE and helping agencies are keeping America safe while trying to contain the violence without encouraging it. The two views on whether this is or is not acceptable are broken into two different categories, left media and right media.

Left media, in this case, are in favor of the protests. Left media describes the protests as minimal violence, suggests law enforcement is what is causing the situations to get worse, and lack of precedent for Trump's actions. (Brechter, 2025).

The right media, in this case, think the protests are violent and out of hand and the deportation is necessary. Right media describes the protests as the left downplaying the violence, LA is out of control, and frames law enforcement actions as necessary.

Both left and right show a different perspective on authority and perspective. The right media is more authoritative and is in favor of ICE deporting immigrants. While on the left media, the perspective is the deportations are unnecessary on children and families who are doing no wrong to be deported.

Characteristics needed to promote a positive protest in the media's eyes are the idea that the protest is in favor of economic growth and well-being. (Andrews & Caren, 2010). A protest can be successful if those protesting can show how it will benefit the community or the country. Remaining calm while staying resilient is what will draw positive attention throughout the media.

Representations of social movements would have a few differences between mass media and social media when it comes to exposure. Mass media, such as the news, shows small footage of a protest and it can cover both negative and positive views on the movement. Social media allows individuals to create content that shows their perspective on the protest as well as footage that is not put on the news. Social media is more of a "behind the scenes" footage and commentary. In this case, it can show a person's perspective on how deportation is affecting their lives. On the other hand, it can show those in favor of law enforcement and how deportation will benefit America.
