Adolescents in recovery need to have a continuing care plan because they usually don't have the internal structure or maturity to stay sober by themselves. The textbook in chapter 12 explains that " if you send them back to a sick home and community, they will be using." Adolescents need ongoing support to keep practicing the skills they learned in treatment. Recovery is a long-term process, and adolescents especially need guidance, encouragement, and accountability after they leave their program. A continuing care plan should include regular attendance at 12-step meetings, weekly check-ins with a sponsor or mentor, and random drug testing to make sure they are being accountable. The textbook also recommends including " a school and community advocate," like a coach or youth pastor, to provide extra support when needed. It can also be a good idea to include fun sober activities and peer group outings so that teens can continue experiencing fun in sobriety. 4. What are some of the differences in treating an adolescent in recovery versus and adult? Treating adolescents is very different compared to treating adults because they are still developing mentally, physically, and emotionally. The textbook points out that adolescents, " must be habilitated rather than rehabilitated" because they usually haven't learned the life skills adults already have. Teens are still forming their identity and don't yet understand the long-term consequences that could come from some other actions. A lot of adolescents believe they are invincible, which makes it harder for them to take their addiction seriously. A major difference between adolescents and adults is that adolescents rarely enter treatment by choice. They are usually forced into treatment by their parents or the court. This means they start off Their treatment more angry and resistant compared to adults first starting out. Counselors have to slowly build trust with their clients and provide more structured environments. Another difference is that programs that work well for adults, such as lectures or warnings about long-term health risks, don't always work as well for teens. Instead, Interactive Group activities and rewards, like a point system and peer support, help adolescents engage with their recovery. 5. What are some of the advantages to involving family in a client's recovery? What are some of the concerns to think about when involving a client's family in the treatment process? There are both advantages and disadvantages to involving family in a client's recovery. Involving family in a client's recovery can be helpful because addiction often affects the entire family and not just the person using. The textbook explains that addiction is " a family disease," and recovery is more successful when the family is involved. Family support can provide the client with emotional encouragement, accountability, and stability, which are important for adolescents. When families learn healthy ways to communicate and how to stop enabling addictive behaviors, it strengthens the client's recovery. One disadvantage to involving a client's family and the treatment process is that some families have their own issues with substance abuse, denial, or emotional trauma that can get in the way of a family member's recovery. Family members may unknowingly enable the client and their addictive behaviors. It's important for the counselor/care team to assess whether the home environment is safe and supportive before involving them with too much of the client's care.
