Since the Catch-21 pandemic started DeeAL was having problems. Everybody was stressed and worried at the supermarket chain. Workers had decided to strike, truck drivers were having major problems getting supplies across borders to make deliveries and customers were angry. In an attempt to solve the problems, the CEO Mott Sorrison had called in his top manager Gladis Barr to help manage all the issues, but unfortunately Gladis had a very bad breakup with his girlfriend and had taken personal leave. In the meantime, the situation at DeeAl got worse as staff became angry and upset about how to run the supermarkets. In order to protect society from the Catch-21 pandemic, the government would issue orders to all businesses that their staff would need to wear different Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to protect both workers and customers. These changed often depending on the advice government had at any time. Moreover, the PPE requirements to protect against Catch-21 were strange and sometimes obscure. One day they told the country to wear red shirts because red seemed to protect people against Catch-21, then the next day they said not to wear red but to wear pink masks with polka dots and then two days later this advice was amended to say that red was very good at protecting people indoors and masks with pink polka dots were good for outdoors. Staff were confused and because they spent most of their day working in the supermarkets, they had little time to keep up with government updates and were therefore often trying to enforce outdated rules on both staff and customers. Mott, knew he had a big communication problem, so he called in his friend Rafael Frythebird a communication specialist he had worked with in the past. While Frythebird, was his name. he was also known as "the Joker". This was a term of endearment because he often used jokes to reduce the tension and calm frustrated people. Unfortunately, Rafael was holidaying in Westralia at the time Mott called and while he tried to fly back to Canberra to help Mott and DeeAl, he was unable to obtain the required Visas. When he arrived at the airport, he was detained in a hotel with no wifi connection and could not contact Mott via zoom or any other technology to help out. Because Westralia had closed its borders, there was talk that the Joker would be sent to an island off Siberia for quarantine. Meanwhile, in one of the stores a fight broke out between a manager Anna McClowan and some customers over the PPE that was required to be worn in the store at 2pm in the afternoon. Things got very heated during the fight. A video was taken and posted to social media showing Anna grabbing the customer's glass mask and smashing it on the ground yelling "We will make the decision about who enters our store and YOU don't have the right PPE to enter!". The video had gone viral on Tock Ticking and was the most viewed video in the country that day. Customers had reacted very quickly calling for boycotts on the store and reports were coming in that customers were yelling insults at staff causing more of them to be upset and request stress leave. To be fair to Anna, she was right with regard to PPE. That morning, the Prime Minister of the country had made an announcement that glass masks were no longer effective as of 12:01PM and that shops would require people to wear cloth masks rather than glass masks, but obviously not all customers had known and in this case MGMT2100 Case Study.
