Write a contemporary SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET Yes, it is time to write a Shakespearean sonnet, but since you do not live in the 17th century, you will write a contemporary Shakespearean sonnet using contemporary language and concentrating on a contemporary theme. Why? Because poets, like all writers, are witnesses of their time period. Make sure that your poem is 14 lines. Make sure that each lines includes 10 syllables if it is not written in iambic pentameters (5 iambic feet). Make sure to respect the rhyme scheme for the Shakespearean sonnet -- abab cdcd efef gg (check your textbook page 266). Try to implement the volta, which is usually situated before the final couplet in Shakespearean sonnets. (the volta is the turn of thought or argument) Try to include most of the 5 essential elements of poetry, but focus on images and the sound of language (check your notes)
