All historians make arguments, or complex statements that seek to prove a certain explanation of a past event or action. Arguments are supported by facts, which are established by evidence. Evidence for historical arguments comes in virtually unlimited forms. What is good evidence for one argument may have nothing to do with another. But, in general, historians recognize two general categories of evidence used in all historical arguments: evidence coming from primary sources and that coming from secondary sources.

Complete the following definitions of each kind of source.

Primary sources offer evidence that is often unrefined, are produced during grad the events a historian is directly researching, and are usually not intentionally addressed to future historians. In historical arguments, primary sources are not grad used to establish facts.

Generally speaking, secondary sources offer commentary on those events, and are used to establish facts independently. However, they can and often do help historians corroborate or challenge facts established by primary sources
