Question: Homework 3 Using AISC LRFD design principles, determine the maximum factored reaction R u = P n that can be developed for the simple shear

Homework 3
Using AISC LRFD design principles, determine the maximum factored reaction Ru=Pn that can
be developed for the simple shear (framed beam) connection shown in the figure below. Calculate
the capacity using basic principles considering all applicable limit states and show all
calculations.
(a) Determine Ru neglecting the eccentricity entirely, as is common practice for bolted simple
shear connections.
(b) Determine Ru including the eccentricities:
I. For the line of bolts in the web of the W24 x 104, which are subjected to eccentric
shear, use the elastic vector approach.
II. For the bolted connection to the flange of the column, use the case in which the
neutral axis is not at the center of gravity of the bolt group to compute the bolt
tension.
(c) Compare the results from part (a) and (b) and comment on the findings.
