Homework 4-50 points total
Due Date: Friday, October 13,2024 at 11:59 pm
Instructions:
Grading will be based on the steps taken towards the solution. However, presentation of
your work is equally important
You may consult with others in class but your assignment must be original in nature
Use Canvas to submit your work in pdf format. Do not upload multiple pdf's
You report must be clear and legible. This is your responsibility.
Objectives:
At the end of this homework students will be able to:
Analyze and design a wood member subjected to combined P+M using LRFD
Use the Excel spreadsheet you developed to determine member capacities; you are
welcome not required to use Excel to solve for the design portion as well
Prepare a professionally written report
Problem 1 Axial Plus Combined Bending (50 pts )
You are required to determine the size of a pinned-pinned single stud wood member used in an
exterior stud wall. This is for a one-story office building.
The exterior wood stud is spaced at 16 in on center. This member is subjected to axial plus
combined bending. The axial loads P comes from the roof loading. The distributed load comes
from the wind pressure or suction. Bending occurs about the strong axis bending.
The required load combination is LC=1.2D+1.6Lr+0.5W. Other load combinations are
required for final design but NOT necessary at this time. Use LRFD for the analysis and design
phases. Show FBDs to substantiate your work. See Figures 1 and 2 below.
Use the Excel file you developed to determine member capacities. Feel free to modify it for
design if you like it. Show all calculations.
Assume the stud is fully braced by interior/exterior sheathing. The MC exceeds 19% and the
temperature is 100 F . The height of the wall is 10 ft .
Assume visually graded dimension lumber Spruce Pine Fir (SPR) No.1 & Better. Determine the
deflection due to wind. The limit is wWD=L180. The studs are not incised.
