How can I answer this discussion post?
The publics idea about nuclear energy involving power plants are often false. Fearful discussion is known to have been spread around regarding these power plants for many years. People don't know what to think of them and their safety. While the public is not wrong in thinking that power plants are dangerous, the possibility of one actually having a meltdown and killing thousands of people is very low. 20% of this nations power comes from power plants and is also carbon free. 94 power plants are known to operate in the US across 28 states. If power plants are as dangerous as the public thinks they are, wouldn't we be hearing of meltdowns all the time? Only a handful of power plant accidents have been heard of.
The worst power plant accident happened in 1986, in Chernobyl Ukraine. This accident wasn't considered an actual meltdown but a reactivity accident. Runaway nuclear chain reactions was the main cause for this accident along with poor design. This disaster cost around 700 billion in US dollars and involved 500,000 personnel. The deaths counted were around 24,000.
Another well known power plant accident happened in Harrisburg PA in 1979. The main cause of the meltdown was the failure of pumps that fed cooling water to the reactor. Decaying fission fragments continued to heat the core causing the meltdown. A crazy movie was released right after this accident happened called The China Syndrome making people think that the accident was a lot worse than it actually was. There was no reported deaths from this area.
As a PA resident, I live 20 minutes from the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station. The Susquehanna river runs right beside the plant so I grew up fishing this river with my dad. I do recall having a sense of fear seeing the power plant as a little person and wondering if it would melt down and kill me while I was fishing silly enough. But like I had that fear looking at this massive thing with spoke coming out of the top and knowing there was radioactivity, I don't blame the public for being scared of them. Recently I found out that they are planning to re open this power plant in 2028 if it gets approved since it has been shut down for so long.
Psalm 27:1 says, "The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall i fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?"
