Managers and leaders are not the same thing - you manage things, you lead people. All good managers do not necessarily have to be good leaders, because not all managers have direct reports and may focus more on managing functions, compliance, or other aspects. Managers in charge of people and held accountable for those individual's performance absolutely need to be good leaders if they want to be good managers. I've had managers in my career who were very metric-driven themselves and completely detached from any kind of empathy for those who worked on their team and were responsible for doing the very work that drove those metrics. This manager led by fear, by "telling the way" rather than "showing the way," and they overall had a severe lack of buy-in, respect, and motivation from their team. This leads them to be an overall poor manager.In today's workforce, it is not enough to simply be a "boss" anymore. You need to have great people skills, empathy, and the ability to inspire others as well as earn the respect of others. Without any of these traits as a manager in charge of people, you will be mediocre at best and set yourself up for failure at worst
