How to retain nurses? Retaining nurses appears to be complicated for all companies. I could give ideas to retain staff, but I am still doubtful of success. Healthcare is a business first. Money is always in the bigger picture. A competitive salary is the first way to retain staff. Nursing salaries are expected to be more than before the pandemic. Is this realistic? Yes and no. Companies are looking to fatten their pockets at any cost. Before reaching out to agency staff, I would offer that same pay to my full-time staff. The work environment determines how long staff remain with a company. Rules should be standardized across the board. Nurses should not be expected to give high quality care to six patients, admit and/or discharge the patients, obtain vital signs, give medications, and keep their patients clean and turned. It is impossible to do all safely and without overworking ourselves. There would be opportunities for overtime if needed. Support staff would be available, even if an agency were involved. Annual raises and yearly performance bonuses would be offered. I would also make sure the nurses are celebrated more often than just during Nurses Appreciation Week.
