Question:
How would you balance respect for cultural diversity with a commitment to respect for individual rights in the following three cases?
1) You are a woman assigned to work in a Middle Eastern country that requires women to wear traditional clothing that often goes against one’s faith or sense of personal identity. Or you are a man who is a member of a team whose members include women who are required to wear traditional clothing. If you decline the assignment, your career advancement might suffer.
Present and defend your view about whether this clothing policy is morally justified. In doing so, consider some of the ethical principles we’ve discussed thus far including rights ethics, utilitarianism, etc. As an employee, how might you diffuse potential cultural conflict given this working environment?
2) Your company is asked to design a more efficient weaving apparatus whose size is easily adjustable to young children, and you are assigned to travel abroad and work on the project. You know that the primary market for the apparatus is countries that use child labor and traffic children.
What do you do?
3)The company you work for in the U.S. has decided to move the manufacturing of asbestos to less-developed countries due to cheaper labor costs and the fact that overseas workers are willing to take greater risks. Your boss says that taking advantage of this willingness isn’t necessarily unjust exploitation or paternalism because:
Workers are informed of the risks
They are paid more for the risks
The company you work for takes some steps to lower the risks.
What do you think of this handling of the hazardous chemical asbestos for international worker safety? Does it constitute exploitation or paternalism? Explain. What do you think the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) would say about the outsourcing of the manufacture of hazardous chemicals?
