Hello Chloe! I understand you are concerned about the new team. I assume they introduced themselves to you and told you a little bit about their background. Every single one of them is motivated to make a life for themselves and has no intent of messing around. Gen Zers are often flexible, adaptable and enjoy working with a team. I do not believe you are being biased or stereotyping, just trying to be knowledgeable on your new team members by asking questions. However, I think the questions need to go in a different direction. Instead of wondering about their looks, try asking the following questions What are the goals of each of the team members? What is their role and responsibilities? Do they value different perspectives? Do they have what it takes to collaborate and meet the deadlines of a team? We cannot base intelligence and intent off of appearance. As a manager, it is very important to be culturally competent. This means valuing and respecting any differences and foster an inclusive work environment. Your discomfort could be from not having experienced this kind of cultural exposure, and that is okay. Your next steps would be to take time to learn about these individuals: their experiences, goals, and interests. Set your expectations of the project and help mentor them. Remember that diversity is a strength and adds lots of perspectives. If you need anything else, please feel free to reach out. Good luck, Morgan
