Organizations are often faced with challenges they do not even know exist until outside forces such as competition make the issues more pronounced. One area that companies often must focus on in order to continue to improve is innovative change. Innovation is often associated with technological innovation and that can be a core component, but in some circumstances that is not what companies need to innovate. According to Euchner (2013) change management could be described as innovation (p. 10). Occasionally a problem such as growth, which most companies build their organizational strategy around can lead to a change management need. According to Palmer and Dunford and Buchanan (2017) growth can lead to the need for a rules based approach, which tends to prevent innovation (3.4). A change in how a company innovates or thinks about innovation can be a change with a major impact on how the company operates and impacts those on the front lines of the organization. When it comes to innovation and the strategy around how a company would implement a change management strategy around innovation, everyone in the organizational structure could be impacted. Since innovation often is associated with technology, those on the front lines of the organization are going to have to learn new ways of doing things. For example, when I first began my career in insurance, computers were not a major resources, which meant we did many calculations by hand. As my career has progressed, computers are the only way of doing business. This type of innovation can be somewhat gradual, the change process for some organizations is quicker and more difficult for those in the trenches to manage and adapt to. When it comes to implementing a change that involves innovation, it can have different levels of impact for everyone involved in the change. For some employees or managers the change can be easier to make and even with the complex nature, these individuals will adapt. Still for others, the change is going to be much more challenging and require more strategy and leadership to help them move through it. Issues with innovation change that could impact those on the front line include learning new systems or processes and methods of doing a job or task one way, that gets flipped and must be done a whole new way. Having to make a transition or change due to innovation can lead to performance issues and the inability for those employees to complete their jobs. For this reason, one of the strategies when implementing change is to involve all individuals that will be a part of the change, which can lead to a more successful change process.
