Process selection is when the most appropriate method of completing a task is determined. The decisions used are a series of technical or engineering issues and volume or scale issues. Primary methods used to produce a service or good are technical or engineering issues. Decisions related to demand are the volume or scale issues. These decisions require the right mix of technology so it can make the workforce more productive (Vonderembse & White, 2013). Process decisions should happen simultaneously while making both product design and capacity decisions. The basis for the producers capacity decision centers on how many people will buy the product. The quantity of people who will buy it reflects in the design of the product. The cost is what determines how many people will be able to buy it (Vonderembse & White, 2013). The process of making a product is affected by design decisions. Product design is a result of both process technology and selection influence. Teamwork is vital in the process as the team decides on the types of equipment and facilities that are needed when developing the product design. These decisions can also include components such as education and training. Another part of process selection involves capacity. Capacity determines the demand for the products in the market. Capacity is necessary because it balances the expenses for equipment related to manufacturing. The products made, the design, and the capacity must all balance for the cost to be worth the process. If they do not balance a higher product price may help offset the capacity of using expensive manufacturing equipment (Vonderembse & White, 2013).
