Productive failure Learning Organizations treat occasional failure as natural and as an opportunity to develop better understand and improve future performance. Some organizations even argue that productive failure is valuable (Palmer, I., Dunford, R., & Buchanan, D. 2017). When transformation is poorly led, fatigue sets in. 70% of organizational transformations fail according to research done by IBM (Gleeson, B. 2017). A time when the organization I am employed with failed happened when the organization decided to start accepting Medicaid. I work for an (MAT) Medicated assisted treatment program that treats opioid addicted clients. In the beginning the organization was a pay clinic which did not accept Medicaid. The decision was made by the organization to accept Medicaid to assist patients that could not afford, while also increasing the company's client ratio which would increase revenue. The plan was poorly planned and the branch that I work was intended as the test pilot for the transformation. The billing procedure was the first failure due to not coming up with a system that would accurately keep the balances correct. The company also had to hire another physician and licensed counselors to assist Medicaid patients due to state regulations that required these changes. The next unanticipated change was the increased number of clients that accumulated due to no other companies accepting intakes of new clients due to the COVID 19 virus. The results of the change began to overwork the certified counselors and cause burnout. One of the changes that occur when accepting Medicaid patients is an increase of paperwork and new procedures to meet the guidelines of state regulations. Although revenue increased, the work culture became stressful with all the new changes and not enough time to counsel the increased number of new patients and follow the everchanging guidelines necessary to remain compliant with Medicaid regulations. The company was attempting to creating new cultural experiences that specifically supported the vision for improved collaboration (Gleeson, B. 2017). The collaboration was aimed at providing new affordable services by using Medicaid and the state, but the strategical decision making to implement this change was not planned which caused the failure. The thing that was learned by this failure is there has to be precise, clear understanding of the plan in order to be successful. Why do some organizations fail but become stronger while others fail to recover? The reason some organizations fail but become stronger is by using communication strategies that allows the employees to believe in the vision without causing burnout by the unplanned strategies. Other organizations fail to recover by the use of miscommunication and undeveloped training procedures that cause resistance to the change, burnout and turnovers.
