Instructions
This is a group assignment. You will complete this assignment in your group cohort (your cohort members can be found in D2L under Communication > Groups). The instructor will post the discussion schedule on D2L at the beginning of the term.
The instructor will assign your group a module and respective chapter from the textbook. Your group must choose one case from Canlii to lead a discussion on the legislative compliance issues addressed in the case.
Groups are required to organize their discussion as follows:
Introduction- the group must provide a concise overview of the case using the FILAC model. Groups have the freedom to select their case as long as the case can be connected to the topic the group has been assigned. The group's overview must demonstrate an accurate understanding of the employment law and/or legal issue related to the case. The overview must also discuss an accurate understanding of risk to the employer. The summary should be no more than 5 minutes.
Questions- the group must prepare open-ended questions to facilitate a discussion with the class on actions the employer could have taken to ensure legislative compliance. Group will use these questions to generate a 10 minute discussion. The group will facilitate class participation to encourage classmates to contribute to the discussion. All group members are required to participate in facilitating the discussion. Refer to the document "Student Led Discussion Resource"
Facilitation - your discussion should demonstrate that you prepared and practiced for this discussion. Your discussion should be well organized and there should be a smooth transition from one speaker to the next. Your time should be spent encouraging your classmates to discuss your questions and not spent presenting to your classmates on the case.
Conclusion- the group must end the discussion by providing a concise conclusion with 2-3 realistic action an employer can take to ensure compliance based on the legal issue that was presented in the case. Your conclusion should be supported by legislation and examples from the case. Your conclusion should be no more than 5 minutes.
The discussion is a maximum of 20 minutes including introduction and conclusion. The instructor will keep time and cut the discussion off at the 20-minute mark even if the group discussion has not been concluded. Groups are encouraged to practice their discussion before facilitating with the class to ensure they allocate their time appropriately.
