Huntington's disease (HD) is due to an autosomal DOMINANT gene. This disease results in deterioration of the nervous system and often symptoms do not begin until middle age, usually when a person is in their 40's or 50's. Heidi is concerned with whether or not she has inherited the gene for Huntington's disease. Her aunt Alexandra (her mother's sister) was recently diagnosed with Huntington's disease at age 46. Heidi's mother, Ava, died at age 61, and never showed symptoms of Huntington's disease. Heidi's maternal grandparents are Charles and Amelia (parents of Ava and Alexandra).
