CASE 4
DIRTY LAUNDRY IN THE FAST FASHION INDUSTRY: H\&M'S DILEMMA*
Fashion can express our personal style. To that end, many people want high-fashion looks without the exorbitant price tag. Fast fashion refers to low-cost clothing collections that mimic the latest runway trends but are mass produced in as little as three weeks. 1
Unfortunately, the fast fashion industry has caused great stress on the environment, as well as to garment workers and other stakeholders. Fast fashion contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, water depletion, river and ocean pollution, and the amount of waste going into landfills. \({}^{2}\) Furthermore, human rights violations, particularly among suppliers, have tarnished the fast fashion business model. \({}^{3}\)
With a strong market position, H\&M, a multinational retail company known for its fast fashion clothing, is one of the most recognizable brands in the global fast fashion industry. Should CEO Helena Helmersson champion change and encourage accountability across the industry's supply chain? Should H\&M revise its business strategy to become more environmentally sustainable at the risk of losing a leading position in the fast fashion industry?
Company Background
H\&M, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, employs 110,325 people worldwide. \({}^{4}\) Its FY2020 sales were \(\$ 20.2\) billion USD. \({}^{5}\) It has a market cap of \(\$ 40.9\) billion. \({}^{6}\mathrm{H}\mathrm{\& M}\)(STO: HM-B) recently appointed Helena Helmersson, a longtime employee, as its new CEO.
The company was founded in 1947 by Erling Persson. The business was originally named Hennes, Swedish for "hers," because the store initially sold women's apparel. It wasn't until 1968, when Persson acquired the hunting wear brand Mauritz Widforss, that the company became known as Hennes \& Mauritz. The name was eventually shortened to H\&M.
H\&M has slowly expanded internationally, starting with England in 1976, then opening stores in the United States in 2000 and China in 2007. They now operate close to 5,000 stores in 74 countries. \({}^{7}\) H\&M was also one of the first retailers to take advantage of the internet boom when they entered the online shopping market in \(1998.^{8}\) Currently, H\&M serves 52 markets digitally.
H\&M aims to democratize high fashion. According to its website, H\&M's vision is to make fashion accessible to everyone, in a way that's good for people, the planet, the industry, and their business. 9
H\&M's business strategy is to adjust to rapidly changing fashion trends while keeping costs low. To do so, they make a vast amount of clothing as fast as possible by outsourcing production to suppliers in countries such as Bangladesh and China where labor is cheap. In fact, H\&M is the largest buyer of apparel from Bangladesh. H\&M does not own any factories. Instead, inventory is purchased from nearly 800 suppliers. \({}^{10}\)
