Wounded now, he is unable to even find his normal prey, let alone stalk and kill it. His hunger drives him to easier meals; he kills another calf, and then a dog outside a nearby town. He stays too long. and a group of villagers shoot him again. This time, they kill him. Jaguars, the villagers say, are nothing but killers. They should be shot on sight, anytime, anywhere. Similar stories could be told about thou- 41 sands of other young jaguars, from Mexico to Argentina. In recent decades, over half of the big cat's prime habitat has been taken over by ranch- ing, farming, and development. The jaguars are threatened. Conservationists are concerned and working to protect these powerful animals from extinction.
