I have a question regarding the correct null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis for the following study involving low income women in urban communities.

Variables:

1) House Problem (independent variable): This is about the current housing problems for the women in the sample (1=no housing problem, 2=one housing problem, 3=two or more housing problems).

2) Level of Satisfaction (outcome variable): measures the overall satisfaction with material sell-being. Each of the 4 item was coded from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 4 (very satisfied) so the overall score could be from 4 to 16.

Would the null hypothesis be-The number of house problems does not affect the level of satisfaction of the women.

Would the alternative hypothesis be- The number of house problems does affect the women's level of satisfaction.

I want to make sure that I am thinking of this problem correctly based on the variables. Should the hypotheses be changed? I would like feedback and an explanation of how this independent variable correlates to the outcome variable in terms of hypotheses. Thank you!
