Option 1: Examine one or more major battles, including both the Axis and Allies strategies, the outcome of the battles, and the subsequent effects of the victory/defeat. Include an examination of the technologies that were crucial factors in the battle. The Axis of WW2 was made up of German, Italian, and Japanese forces. All three of these forces had one thing in common world wide domination and they were happy to help one another out to achieve this. Operation Husky was an invasion of Sicily that was carried out by US and British allies. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was in control of the whole operation, but the British carried out the navel and landing operations. The goal was to capture this island that was under Axis control for air and water missions in the Mediterranean. On July 9th and 10th, US and British landings to the island occurred via air to be able to secure key bridges and traffic points, but "were only marginally successful due to strong winds and faulty navigation."(Jamieson, 2009) Amphibious landings occur on July 10th on the southeast coast of Sicily, although due to the weather there were some confusion and misdirection. Amphibious landings consist on water vehicles that can also be driven on land or at least land on the beaches and bring military forces ashore. Meanwhile the Italian forces were assembling further inland allowing the Allis ashore. Meanwhile the Italian forces were assembling further inland allowing the Allis defenses to assemble properly. The few German forces that were on the island were not able to communicate affectively which worked out for the Allied forces. By the middle of July more German forces were send from the Italian main land. But by July 22nd the US Army had control of the capital and eventually the Germans exited the island over a 3 day period. "Operation Husky was a primary factor contributing to Italy's surrender on September 1943, the deposal of Benito Mussolini, and the country's subsequent shift to the side of the allies." (Jamieson, 2009) This was a positive outcome for the Allies as they pushed the Germans back onto the mainland and moving other troops to Italy weakening other points that would have had German control. The capture of the Sicilian island also provided a safe and secure area for future allied forces to gather themselves before missions and control of anything that may happen in the south of Europe.
