Project problem Statement - Houston Oil company are struggling to pay employees accurately and on time due to doing a manual payroll system instead of an automated one due to the complicated calculations that one would have to do. The main problem is that the employees are not getting paid on time due to the manual calculations. A subproblem that may arise from this are unhappy employees that will have to go to their supervisors to complain, causing workflow to be disrupted. Not to mention, another subproblem is that the company cannot keep its financial statements accurate because payroll plays a part into it which cannot be factored in because it is late to pay its employees. The simple solution is to employ someone to make an automatic payroll system for the company or install a software that will automatically make the calculations. - A system needs to be created that requires multiple user data access using a username and passwords that have multiple tiers of access. Certain roles should be able to view information while certain positions should be able to change certain payroll information. The issue with this is that each employee must be classified with some sort of tier to grant specific access to them. This could be a very tedious and confusing process if roles have not been fully decided or if there is gray area between the roles. This is because certain roles are given certain permissions to interact with the payroll system. First, a database system must be installed or created to keep track of usernames and passwords of the users. Next, an authentication system must be implemented in order to verify the identity of the user through their password to grant access to the payroll system. Simultaneously, the system classifies that specific user and only grants them the permissions that they are assigned by the system administrator. These are the things that are required for a multi-tiered authentication system. - The new automated payroll system must be able to keep track of how many hours a particular employee has worked in order to have correct data for calculations. If there is already a clock-in and clock-out system in place, it must be connected to a database to log those hours automatically and assign them to the correct user. If there is not a clock-in and clock-out system, that must first be installed onto the computers of the company in order to log the hours. The database should be capable of doing complex calculations based on the information given. The information needed for calculations include: how many hours an employee worked, what is the salary of the employee, as well as the bonuses that employee may have earned. - The system must also be able to keep track of certain sensitive employee information such as pay, allowances, deductions, taxes, 401 contributions, and vacations, etc. This database should be lumped with the salary calculations system because they are interrelated. Information that would be needed to effectively run this system are: calculated salary, any standing loans that an employee has for the company, the tax bracket of the employee, tax calculations with the pay period, the amount of retirement contributions an employee contributes, and how many vacation days an employee has. This system should roll over from the year previously in order to keep an accurate system
