I NEED HELP COMING UP WITH A THOROUGH AND LOGICAL RESPONSE FROM MY CLASSMATE.
HERE IS THE QUESTION: Several polls have revealed that 18% of Black male voters chose Trump. What values or beliefs might support that behavior?
Directions: Please provide an assessment on your classmates response based on class readings and discussions about persuasion. This should be much more than your opinion or belief. Your remarks should present an informed consideration that identifies and appreciates that all behaviors are reasonable and logicalbased on the active perspectives and beliefs. Your task is to explain those beliefs that might support particular behaviors.
Comments should be thoughtful and complete. You must write more than "I agree with that comment." It should be more like "that comment has merit as the following example shows" or "that comment could be expanded to include the observation of (another) theory."
Discussion comments will be evaluated and graded on:
- Evidence of understanding and application of course readings, power points, and discussions to address the questions.
- Use of examples and explanations to illustrate or challenge readings, power points, and discussions.
- Clear organization of ideas, clarity, grammar.
- Evidence of interaction, development, or disagreement with other posts.
Here is what I need to respond to:
Trump is a unique counter point to mainstream political beliefs. While running as a Republican, many consider him to be a Republican In Name Only (RINO). However, this has worked to draw in mainstream conservatives as well as independents who would normally have little interest in politics in general.
So this leads us to the question as to why 18% of Black male voters chose Trump. First and foremost, many could have supported Trump solely on the basis of political affiliation. In other words, Trump running under the Republican banner, and all that comes with it. Many support the Republican party or are Republican based on their beliefs from their stance on pro-life (anti-abortion) to their economic and tax policies that focus on trickle-down economics. Regardless of which policy or policies a person supports the Republican Party for, if you believe in one or all of them, you will favor a Republican candidate.
However, Trump is also a political outsider, a RINO in many regards. He ran on a platform calling the system broken, and how he would "drain the swamp" once elected. For those also feeling cheated by this broken system, or feeling that their voices are not being heard or represented, it is easy to see why many flocked to support him. He gives off the appearance that he speaks his mind, and that it is true. Many value truth, and find him to be credible and trustworthy because he doesn't speak like a politician.
Lastly, their is Trump's socio-economic standing which draws individuals to support him. He was a television star for years with his show the Apprentice. In it, he is not only recognized for being on television, but for being on television because he is this savvy businessman. Watching television is part of American life, and few, if any, can claim they never caught at least one episode of the Apprentice in their lifetimes. It was simply another platform to ensure Trump was well-known, not only his image, but this idea that he is one of the world's greatest businessmen.
One can also not discount the economic aspects Republicanism pushes. I was once told that people vote Republican not because they are wealthy, but because they hope to become wealthy one day. Voting for Trump or simply voting Republican may go against ones best interest in the short term, but their belief is that low taxes and less regulation will help them in the long term.
