Use Case Comparison

Users access the Internet for a huge number of different reasons from a variety of different device types. In this Discussion, you will consider these different modes of access.

A use case description is a document that describes how a user accomplishes a specific desired task in a system. A typical use case description includes the actor, the scenario, the triggering event, a description of the activity, and potential exceptions. These are examples of two use case scenarios involving Internet map access on different devices.

Use Case Name:	Real-Time Navigation
Scenario:	Navigate real-time to desired location using mobile device map application
Trigger Event:	User accesses mobile map application to facilitate real-time navigation to desired location
Actor:	car driver
Activity Flow:	Actor Activities:	System Activities:
	1. Accesses map application 3. Identifies desired end location 6. Follows first route direction 8. Follows each successive direction 9. Drives to end location	2. Opens map and display current location 4. Utilizes map and current traffic data to determine best route to end location 5. Displays and states first direction in route 7. Displays and states each successive direction 10. Stops giving directions
Exceptions:	4. If the system cannot find or cannot route to the desired destination, then the user must be notified and asked to revise the destination. 6/7. If driver does not follow a route direction given by the system, then the system recalculates the route to the destination and provides new directions based on this recalculation.

Use Case Name:	Navigation Route Printout
Scenario:	Provide a printout with driving directions between two
Trigger Event:	User accesses web application to obtain driving directions
Actor:	car navigator
Activity Flow:	Actor Activities:	System Activities:
	1. Accesses map application 3. Chooses option for driving direction. 5. Enters desired start and end location 8. Selects to print directions	2. Display options for map access 4. Displays form for input of beginning and ending location 6. Utilizes map data to determine best route between location 7. Displays route map and directions 9. Prints directions
Exceptions:	6. If the system cannot find one or both locations or cannot route between them, then the user must be notified and asked to revise the request. 7. If the actor wishes to change the route, mechanisms allow him or her to do so.

Clearly, these two use cases will have different system requirements even though they accomplish approximately the same thing.

Consider two different, specific activities for which someone might utilize the Internet. One should be for access from a personal computer. The other should be for access from a mobile device.
